30. Birmingham
The curves at milepost 220.7 (40.660458N78.215044W) to milepost 220.2 (40.656325N78.211025W) and milepost 219.3 (40.644342N78.197058W) to milepost 218.8 (40.637114N78.191244W) impose a 40 mph limit upon passenger trains. Straightening them as shown would allow 90 mph operations. The new alignment for the NS line in the vicinity of Birmingham, PA is shown in yellow. The current alignment as it was designed in the 1850's and remains today is shown in blue.
